Home renovations are big projects – and as such, it’s important to have a plan of action before undertaking a home reno project of any scale. Plans, unfortunately, can be hard to generate. That’s why we’ve created this article. Here are 4 tips for planning a home renovation project.

1. Set a budget

Setting your budget and sticking to it is one of the key factors in completing a large renovation project. It’s best practice to set aside a sum of cash for emergencies; unexpected repairs and unplanned costs. In addition, don’t forget to budget for the indirect cost of renovation which could include staying at a hotel and dining out more often while your home is being renovated. It is also necessary to talk to a few contractors like windows installers or flooring specialists to get a rough estimate.

2. Declutter

It might sound simple and unnecessary to mention but in all actuality, packing your things up and decluttering the area of renovation is one of the most important tips we can give you. Doing so will not only help protect your personal belongings but it will also help your team of workers to do their jobs more quickly and efficiently.

If your reno involves the entire home, consider renting a storage unit for your things and if it only involves one or two rooms, utilize your basement, attic, or any spare rooms you might have.

3. Aim for timeless

It can be easy to jump on board with the latest home reno trends that you stumble across on Pinterest or Instagram. However, this might not be the best choice if you’re planning on living in your home long-term.
Why? Because your tastes may change and, as the hype of the trend dies down, you might be left with a design you don’t like anymore. Instead, aim for timeless design choices.

4. Keep pets and children safe

Another tip that seems to go without saying is that you should always ensure that your children and pets are safe. Both can be curious and will want to watch what’s going on, which is fine. This being said, though, dangerous renovation sites should be blocked off using baby gates and other means of barricades to avoid injuries, accidents, and renovation-related disasters.

Whether it’s your windows and doors that need the renovations or your entire en-suite bathroom, these tips will help ensure that the project goes smoothly and gets done in a timely manner.
